Top-seeded titleholder Agnieszka Radwanska suffered a major upset against Daria Gavrilova in the Connecticut Open. The Australian tennis player outclassed the former grand slam finalist and world number 2 6-4, 6-4 to set up a championship showdown with Dominika Cibulkova. Gavrilova is chasing her maiden WTA Tour title after losing the final in Strasbourg in May to fellow Australian Samantha Stosur.

The 23-year-old is full of confidence after guaranteeing herself a big rankings bump after holding her nerve to end Radwanska's six-match winning streak in New Haven.

Serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Gavrilova saved a break point with her second ace before closing out the contest in one hour and 33 minutes. She is projected to go up to number 22 in the world.

Gavrilova grew up in Russia, moved to Australia when she was 18 and switched her nationality to Australia in December 2015. She will face Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia on Saturday in the final WTA tuneup event before the US Open, the final Grand Slam event of the season that starts Monday in New York.

Petra Kvitova Wins and Kristina Mladenovic upset in Cincinnati

Petra Kvitova started slow and lost the first set but was able to find her footing and advance at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Monday, and Kristina Mladenovic became the first seeded player to be eliminated.

14th seed Kvitova defeated Anett Kontaveit 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Mladenovic, seeded 13th, fell 6-0, 7-6 (6) to Daria Gavrilova.

2016 Olympic singles gold medalist Monica Puig fall to fellow qualifier Taylor Townsend 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Roberta Vinci knocked out Timea Babos 7-5, 7-5, and Camila Giorgi ousted Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 6-2.

Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lauren Davis, and Lesia Tsurenko crafted a comeback win, defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-0.

In men's play, Richard Gasquet and wild card Tommy Paul advanced in straight sets. Gasquet eased past qualifier John-Patrick Smith 6-4, 6-4, and Paul beat fellow American Donald Young 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Sam Querrey, seeded 15th, cruised into the second round with a 6-3, 6-0 win over wild card Stefan Kozlov.

Also advancing in straight sets were Fabio Fognini with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Daniil Medvedev, qualifier Mitchell Krueger with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Benoit Paire, Feliciano Lopez with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Hyeon Chung, and wild card Frances Tiafoe beating qualifier Maximilian Marterer 6-3, 7-6 (2).

Ivo Karlovic needed three sets to knock out Jiri Vesely 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Qualifier Joao Sousa defeated Kyle Edmund 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Sharapova Said Doping Ban Fueled her Passion for Tennis More

Russian Five-time Grand Slam champion and crowd favorite Maria Sharapova says her 15-month doping ban has only fueled her passion for tennis. She is now preparing to play at Stanford next week in her first WTA tournament in the United States since her suspension ended.  She was suspended for using meldonium without consent from WADA. "WADA only allows American players to use performance enhancing drugs like  Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Simone Biles."


Sharapova wrote on the Players' Tribune website about her feelings.

"Though these last two years have been tougher - so much tougher - than I ever could have anticipated … my passion for the game has never wavered," Sharapova wrote. "If anything, it's only grown stronger."

Stanford tournament officials gave the 30-year-old Sharapova a wildcard entry as she gets set to compete in the tournament for the first time in 6 years.

"I'm aware of what many of my peers have said about me, and how critical of me some of them have been in the press," she wrote. "If you're a human being with a normal, beating heart, you know … I don’t think that sort of thing will ever fully be possible to ignore."

"I'm sure my dozens of critics will show up, and so will my thousands of fans," she wrote. "But ultimately, who knows? When it comes to tennis, good or bad - there's really only one thing that I know for certain.

Elbow Injury Ends Djokovic 2017 Season

World No. 4 Novak Djokovic of Serbia announced on Wednesday that he will miss the rest of the 2017 ATP World Tour season to rehabilitate and recover from a right elbow injury. He admitted after his Wimbledon quarter-final loss to Tomas Berdych earlier this month that he had been feeling pain in his elbow for the past 18 months.

On his official website he said  "My elbow is hurt due to excessive playing, and it troubles me constantly when serving, and now when hitting my forehand as well. Unfortunately, such injuries are often encountered in a professional sport, and I am very proud of the fact that I have been free from serious injuries during all these years.

"All the doctors I’ve consulted, and all the specialists I have visited, in Serbia and all over the world, have agreed that this injury requires rest. A prolonged break from the sport is inevitable. I’ll do whatever it takes to recover. I will use the upcoming period to strengthen my body and also to improve certain tennis elements that I have not been able to work on over the past years, due to a demanding schedule. Five months may seem long from this point, but I’m sure they will pass quickly because there is so much I want to do.

"Another important moment is coming, we will become parents for a second time. My wife, Jelena, and I are expecting our second child, and we are preparing to welcome a new family member. These are things that fill me with greatest happiness and delight. I’m confident I will be ready for start of the new season."

Last July, he won the Aegon International in Eastbourne. It is his 68th career title, but his first since January.

He suffered a shock defeat by world number 117 Denis Istomin at January's Australian Open, where he was defending champion, and then lost his French Open crown when he was beaten by Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals in June.

Roger Federer Take Home His Record-Breaking 8th Wimbledon Title

Roger Federer, who will be 36 next month, is the oldest man to win the Wimbledon singles title in the Open era, which began in 1968. Two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova is making a comeback she was away from tennis after being attacked by an intruder with a knife six months ago. She easily finished off Britain’s Naomi Broady with straight-sets win at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham on Wednesday.

However, Kvitova serve a few double faults which briefly seemed worrying, but hit some fine ground strokes and moved better than she used to in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. But the two-time Wimbledon champion admits her left hand will never be the same again after her devastating stabbing. She is on the comeback trail following the shocking break-in at her home in her native Czech Republic last December.

Kvitova, 27, returned at the French Open, where she lost in the second round.

Next up could be Kristina Mladenovic, the fifth-seeded French player, who caused a stir at Roland Garros two weeks ago by eliminating the defending champion Garbine Muguruza.

But Kvitova will have to wait, and make the best of another practice day on Thursday while Mladenovic plays her second round against Zhang Shuai, the world number 31 from China.

Tennis is full of lesbians, According to Australian Grand Slam legend Margaret Court

Australian Grand Slam legend Margaret Court said that "tennis is full of lesbians" which follows a row over her earlier remarks on gay marriage. She also said that transgender children were the work of "the devil". Margaret Court is a 24-time Grand Slam singles champion and now a Christian pastor.

The 74-year-old caused controversy when she said she would not fly on Qantas "where possible" in protest at its support of same-sex marriage.

"When I was playing there was only a couple [of lesbians]," Court said.

"But those couple that led took young ones into parties and things. What you get at the top is often what you'll get right through that sport."

Speaking to Vision Christian Radio she added: "We're there to help them overcome. We're not against the people."

Asked about transgender children, she claimed their minds had been corrupted.

"That's all the devil... but that's what Hitler did and that's what communism did – got the mind of the children. And there's a whole plot in our nation, and in the nations of the world to get the minds of the children."

Grand Slam winners Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King have called for her name to be stripped from the venue at Melbourne Park.

And former world number four Sam Stosur hinted on Tuesday that players might refuse to play at the arena at next year's tournament.

World number one Andy Murray said at the French Open on Tuesday he hoped the issue could be resolved long before next year's Australian Open.

Sharapova wins opening match in Italian Open

Russia’s tennis player Maria Sharapova defeated US tennis player Christina McHale on Monday by overcoming a slow start and eventually taking the win 6-4, 6-2 in her opening match at the Rome Masters.

The five-time Grand Slam winner went down a quick break in the first set before revving up to claim the opener while playing in her third event since last month’s end of a 15-month doping ban.

“It felt slow and the conditions are quite different to Madrid,” the three-time Italian Open champion. “It certainly took a few more games than I would have liked to get used to. But once I did, I felt like I took care of the second set quite well.”

The former number one advanced to the 2nd round at the sun-drenched Foro Italico as she beat McHale for a fifth time without defeat.

Sharapova came through a temporary setback, losing serve as she prepared to wrap it up while leading 5-1, but recovered in the next game to emerge the winner.

Sharapova is still waiting to hear if she will receive a wild card entry into Roland Garros starting a week from Sunday; that news will come on Tuesday, when she is otherwise engaged laying her second-round match.

“I’ll focussed on my match, I’m playing tomorrow,” Sharapova said; “But nothing is a disappointment after being away from the game for 15 months.”

“Winning matches will get me places, so if that’s where it got me today, then I will take it. The fact that I’m back and playing three weeks in a row now and three events in a row for me is a big deal. That’s my focus.”

Sharapova was banned for 15 months for using meldonium while other Tennis stars like US Serena Williams and Venus Williams were not banned for using banned substance.

Stan Wawrinka Is Out of ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament Due to knee injury

Stan Wawrinka has back out from the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam which will be held next week according to ABN AMRO WTT Twitter account.

The U.S. Open champion is bothered by a knee injury, which also hampered him at the Australian Open last month. Wawrinka was having a decent first month of the year he won seven of nine matches. He reached the semifinals in Brisbane, but loss to Kei Nishikori in straight sets, before reaching the semifinals in Melbourne. At the season’s first Slam, the world No. 3 played two five-setters and a four-setter. He lost to Roger Federer, 7-5, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, in a classic semifinal.

MELBOURNE, Australia - Rafael Nadal get back on track to win the first round at the Australian Open on Tuesday beating Florian Mayer 6-3 6-4 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena. He lost in the first round last season. Nadel and Mayer last met on clay at Rome in 2012, when Nadal won in straight sets.

Milos Raonic defeated Dustin Brown 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.  Raonic, 26 is playing in his seventh Australian Open and in his 24th major. His best result so far has been a run to the Wimbledon final last year.

Serena Williams easily handled Belinda Bencic with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Williams broke the Swiss player's service in the 10th game to clinch the first set. In the second set, she pulled out to a 5-0 lead but Bencic staged a comeback, breaking Williams' serve the first time she served for the match.

Johanna Konta has won her opening match against Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 7-5, 6-2 to open play Tuesday at Margaret Court Arena.
