Two-time
Grand Slam champion Caroline Wozniacki is planning a comeback to
competitive tennis at the 2024 Paris Olympics where she aims to win an
elusive medal for Denmark. The 32-year-old retired from the sport in
2020 after struggles with rheumatoid arthritis but now feels ready to
chase one final goal - an Olympic medal.
Wozniacki says
competing at the Olympics has always held a special place for her,
having made her debut in 2008. She reached the quarterfinals in 2012 and
the 2nd round in 2016. Now, after having two children in the past two
years, Wozniacki feels physically and mentally prepared to pursue one
final competition.
"Over these past three years away from the
game I got to make up for lost time with my family, I became a mother
and now have two beautiful children I am so grateful for," Wozniacki
said.
To achieve her Olympic dream, Wozniacki has recruited
rising Danish star Holger Rune to partner her in mixed doubles. The
20-year-old was immediately enthusiastic about the idea, stating "For
sure, If she want, I want."
Rune has already achieved
significant success as a professional, rising to a career-high ATP
ranking of No.28 this year. He joins Wozniacki in the hope of bringing
Denmark its first ever Olympic tennis medal at the 2024 Paris Games.
Wozniacki's
retirement in 2020 was precipitated by struggles with rheumatoid
arthritis, an autoimmune disorder that progressively worsened and
conflicted with the physical demands of the Tour.
However, her
pursuit of an Olympic medal shows Wozniacki's indomitable spirit and
competitive drive that made her a Grand Slam champion and World No.1 for
71 weeks. Her comeback attempt with Rune in mixed doubles will be one
of the most compelling storylines to follow at the 2024 Olympics.
